The Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), Prof. Andrew Haruna, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the office of the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
This visit was to formally strengthen collaboration with the NDPC on promoting data protection compliance across Nigerian universities. As centers of knowledge creation, universities are custodians of sensitive data, including students’ records, groundbreaking research, financial transactions, and personal information. It is therefore imperative for our institutions to understand the importance of compliance with data protection principles and align with global best practices.

Prof. Andrew Haruna, And Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
In his response, the National Commissioner, Dr. Olatunji, welcomed the CVCNU delegation and commended their commitment to fostering collaboration with the NDPC. He emphasized that the processing and dissemination of information are critical, especially now that there are existing laws guiding data protection in Nigeria, and breaches of these laws are liable to prosecution.
Dr. Olatunji further stressed the need for continued sensitization and capacity-building training, especially to equip professionals who will serve as Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in universities. He also underscored the importance of appointing DPOs within the university system to ensure that privacy policies are properly developed, secured, and enforced.
Finally, he noted the need to train aspiring Vice-Chancellors, serving Vice-Chancellors, professors, and principal officers on data protection compliance to ensure that leadership at all levels is fully aware of their roles and responsibilities in safeguarding data within the university environment.
