The Official Launch And Public Presentation Of Nigeria’s Homegrown “EagleScan Plagiarism Detection Software”.

The Eaglescan Plagiarism Detection Software is a creation of the Committee of Vice- Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and was executed by five Nigerian Universities and their ICT Directorates. This homegrown solution is  necessitated to impact Academic Research, Authentication and Validation, improve the impact of Research Publications in Nigeria as well as addressing plagiarism in our Nigerian universities and Nigeria at large.

Unveiling the software launch on Tuesday 27th April 2021, the chairman of the occasion Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Deputy Chairman Senate Committee on Higher Education, Prof. Sandy O. Onor stated that creating a positive educational research tool works for our students and other institutional bodies in the country and it is a great stride towards promoting intellectual property authentication and validation.

The Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who was highly represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed while being represented by Dr. Ramon Yusuf, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC “said it is an initiative that will curb out the act of stealing intellectual property of others.  He also added that the Federal Government is fully committed to ensuring that the Anti- Plagiarism measures are fully implemented in institutions across the country.

Our strategic partners on the Eaglescan software project, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Prof. Elias Bogoro in his goodwill message said he is delighted to be part of this project with the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. According to Bogoro “TETfund is not only committed to this initiative but is financially committed to making this project succeed.

The Executive -Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) who was also represented by Dr Ramon Yusuf, emphasized on the need to institutionalize the Anti-Plagiarism policy in our higher institutions.

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) Prof. Is-haq Oloyede called for an all-inclusive concentration on the Eaglescan Software, he also mentioned that the Plagiarism Detection Software be tagged a National Repository.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU), Prof. Timothy Olagbemiro in his address commended Prof. Yakubu Ochefu for reviving this project and giving us a cause to celebrate technology excellence from our universities.

This software will strengthen the Nigerian University System” Prof. Olagbemiro added.

The Secretary – General of the Committee of Vice Chancellors (CVC) Prof. Yakubu Ochefu “ in his speech mentioned the cost of development, deployment and maintenance and marketing of the software.

Eaglescan has fourteen features which includes; Plagiarism Checker, Local Repository, Peer Review, Document Comparison, Grammar Checker, Similarity Index, Language Support/Converter, Global and Local Repository, Title Validation, Abstract Validation, LMS Integration, Report/Certificate Download, User Management and Self – Archival Interface.

It also comes with a robust data analytic engine designed to enhance the quality of research, teaching and learning in Nigeria and, by extension West Africa sub region.
