The Federal University, Otuoke (FUO), in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, is one of nine new federal universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in February 2011. Located in the heart of the Nigerian oil-rich Niger-Delta region, the University, which is 21 kilometres south of the state capital of Yenagoa and 120 kilometres west of the famous seaport of Port Harcourt ( in neighbouring Rivers State ), occupies an expanse of 200 hectares ( 494 acres ) in the Ijaw town of Otuoke. Proposed currently are two academic faculties (Humanities & Social Sciences; Science (Engineering & Technology)) with early aspiration to promote world-class and cutting-edge research in Energy & Environmental Science, Engineering and Technology; Marine Science, Engineering and Technology; Human & Social Dynamics; as well as Business Management & Entrepreneurial Studies. Its anticipated September 2011 starting student population of about 200-300 students is expected to grow gradually to a maximum size of 6,000 students over a 10-15 year period. Its inaugural Vice-Chancellor is Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, and Registrar is Mr. David Suowari. |
